The Northeast Regional Library is taking applications for a Part-Time Library Clerk at the Iuka Public Library. 

Must be 18 years of age and possess a high school diploma or GED. 

Scheduled hours are on an as needed basis.  Some evening and Saturday hours are required. 

Ability to use computers and Internet is mandatory.

Part-Time Library Clerk • Northeast Regional Library

Iuka Public Library, Iuka, MS, a branch of the Northeast Regional Library System.

As needed on a fill-in basis

Some Saturday and evening work will be required.

The part-time worker works under the supervision of the Iuka Librarian and Assistant Librarian. The work requires computer skills and the ability to deal with the public with tact, courtesy, and cheerfulness.  

ROUTINE SCHEDULE

Perform opening and/or closing procedures at the library.

Check out library materials to patrons and check them back in upon return.

Request books for patrons from other libraries.

Keep daily circulation records.

Register new borrowers.

Keep the library clean, neat, and orderly by performing light housekeeping duties.

Record daily financial transactions.

Perform any other duties as needed.

Become familiar with the library’s online catalog.

Assist patrons in using the library’s public access computers.

Learn the Northeast Regional Library’s policy on internet use and how to enforce it.

Learn the library’s collection of materials.

Keep all shelves in proper alphabetical and numerical order.

Assist customers in locating materials and in using the library.

Act as good will ambassador for the library in the community.    

Suggest books and materials to library patrons that might be of interest to them.

Assist the Librarian and Assistant Librarian with special library programs including:

  • National Library Week
  • Summer Library Programs
  • Weekly story hours
  • Any other programming

Tasks may often require standing or sitting for extended periods of time. Employee may frequently exert force equivalent to lifting up to 20 pounds and/or occasionally exert force equivalent to lifting up to approximately 35 pounds. Employee may occasionally encounter environment that is dusty and/or dirty with a lack of environmental control. Must have the physical ability to climb a step stool and rolling ladder, move a book truck, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch and bend. Employee will be required to work under sometimes stressful conditions, and in environments which present continuous interruptions and background noises. Employee will be required to respond appropriately to unexpected situations and scenarios.

NORTHEAST REGIONAL LIBRARY

CATALOGER AND COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT LIBRARIAN

  •  Submits recommendations to the Director in matters of Acquisitions and Cataloging policy.
  • Supervises expenditures of funds for books, audio-visual materials, and electronic materials.
  • Checks current book reviews in professional and other reputable publications to gather titles for possible acquisitions.
  • Coordinates all requests and suggestions from headquarters and branch personal for the purchase of books and other materials, checking the number of copies needed, and checking duplicates.
  • Supervises the electronic ordering of materials.   
  • Keeps a record of orders sent, orders received and outstanding invoices.
  • Communicates with Administrative Assistant regarding invoices.
  • Maintains Atriuum database by adding, deleting, and revising records, and running statistical reports as necessary.
  • Keeps a record of the number of books, periodicals, newspapers, audio-visual materials and electronic materials added to and withdrawn from the collection each year for inclusion in the annual report.
  • Prepares reports.
  • Maintains manual of departmental procedures and keeps it updated.
  • Discards gift books not appropriate for the collection.
  • Catalogs all materials and coordinates processing tasks.
  • Requests all needed supplies from the Administrative Assistant.
  • Keeps in touch with library developments by attending conferences, by reading professional literature, and by taking an active part in professional activities within the state.
  • Makes commitments for public speaking on library related activities.
  • Should be able to manipulate Atriuum, OverDrive, Bound to Stay Bound Books, Baker & Taylor, and other databases and vendor websites.
  • Interacts with branch librarians on all aspects of cataloging and collection development.
  • Makes a monthly report of activities in the department.
  • Weeds the collection using CREW and / or MUSTY.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Cataloger and Collection Development Librarian

The Northeast Regional Library seeks applicants for a full-time position as a Cataloger and Collection Development Librarian at the Headquarters library located in Corinth, MS.

We are seeking an accurate, detail-oriented individual to administer the purchasing and processing services operation. This person is responsible for the management of department operations including acquisitions, collection development, cataloging, processing, and distribution of materials including electronic resources.  The applicant will direct all aspects of collection development including development of policies and procedures, scheduling, training, and supervising. The applicant is also the sole cataloger for the system and will perform copy cataloging and some original cataloging for approximately 6500 items per year. 

The applicant must be self-directed and eager to learn new technology for cataloging and classification as it emerges. Knowledge of the principles and practices of collection management, trends in cataloging, and resources for public library development are essential. The use and understanding of Dewey, MARC records, OCLC, and RDA descriptors will be required. Previous use of the Atriuum ILS would be a plus. Database management will also be required for electronic resources.  Other technological duties might be required.  The applicant must have a strong understanding of Excel, Publisher, and Word.

This position works 32 hours (4 days) per week for a salary of $23,300.  Benefits include participation in the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) of MS, health and life insurance, vacation and sick leave, and paid holidays.

Make personal contacts with clubs and group in your community, offering yourself as a speaker and resource person.

Contact sick people and shut-ins who may need library service.

Encourage school class visits to the library.

Set up special visits to classrooms during Children’s Book Week, National Library Week, and other special times. 

Represent the library by reading, storytelling, or inviting students to an upcoming library event.

Encourage and train volunteer help to extend library services.

Learn the collection.

Review all new books carefully before shelving.

Keep all shelves in proper alphabetical and numerical order.

Read shelves periodically.

Assist customers in locating materials and in using the library.

Become familiar with the library’s online catalog and instruct customers in its use.

Become familiar with the other computers and software programs in the library and instruct customers in their use.

Charge and discharge books and other materials.

Request books.

Prepare the monthly circulation report.

Send overdue notices (or contact delinquent borrowers by phone).

Register new borrowers.

Keep the library neat and orderly.

Schedule use of the meeting room.

Schedule use of the library’s computers.

Prepare and submit all reports, surveys, etc., as requested by Headquarters.

Weed materials under guidance of Headquarters.

Record financial transactions and maintain necessary library funds.

Request materials and supplies from Headquarters.

Perform other duties as needed.

Work with local library boards and Friends groups to further local library services.

Attend all staff meetings and training programs.

Report on problems and recommend solutions to Headquarters.

Keep up with current library developments by reading journals and/or joining professional organizations.

Work closely with city officials in maintaining library building and grounds.

Work with the city board and legislature for financial support as directed by library director.

Cooperate with the Director of the Northeast Regional Library in carrying out the policies as set forth by the Regional Library Board of Trustees.
