Suggested Family Activity 🎃 Pumpkin Bowling

Don’t Toss That Jack O’ Lantern! Try Pumpkin Bowling for Fall Family Fun!
The leaves are falling, the air is crisp, and Halloween has come and gone. You’ve enjoyed your festive jack o’ lanterns, but now what? Instead of simply tossing them in the compost, why not get one more burst of family fun out of them with an activity we like to call Pumpkin Bowling! It’s a fantastic way to enjoy the autumn weather, get some laughs, and even a little bit of exercise, all while creatively repurposing those carved gourds.
This activity is incredibly simple to set up and provides endless entertainment for all ages, from toddlers to grandparents. Plus, it’s a great excuse to get outside and breathe in that wonderful fall air.
What You’ll Need:
- A Small, Round Pumpkin: Look for one that’s a good size to roll – not too big or heavy for the kids, but substantial enough to knock over your “pins.” A pumpkin that has a slightly flatter bottom will roll more predictably.
- “Bowling Pins”: This is where you can get really creative!
- Gourds: A variety of decorative gourds make excellent, autumnal pins. Their different shapes and sizes add an extra challenge!
- Plastic Bottles: Empty plastic water or soda bottles are perfect. Fill them with a small amount of water, sand, or rocks to give them some weight and make them stand steadily. This also adds a satisfying “clatter” when they get knocked over!
- Tin Cans: Empty, clean tin cans can also work well, especially if you want a louder noise.
- Anything Else! Get the family involved in finding other household items that can stand upright and safely be knocked over. The more varied, the more fun!

- An Open Outdoor Space: This activity is definitely best enjoyed in your backyard, a park, or any grassy area. Trust us, it can get a little messy (which is half the fun!).
How to Play Pumpkin Bowling:
- Prepare Your Pumpkin: Carefully cut the stem off your chosen pumpkin. This creates a smoother surface for rolling and reduces the chance of it veering off course.
- Set Up Your Pins: Arrange your “bowling pins” in a staggered triangle shape, just like a traditional bowling alley. Ten pins are ideal, but if you have fewer items, that’s perfectly fine – you can adjust the number to suit your setup. Give them a little space between each other so the pumpkin has room to weave through them.
- Choose Your Lane: Decide on a starting line. You can make it closer for younger children and further back for older kids and adults to add a challenge. Clear away any major obstacles like sticks or large rocks from your “lane.”
- Roll Away! Take turns rolling the stem-less pumpkin towards your improvised pins. The goal is to knock over as many as you can with each roll.
- Keep Score (or Don’t!): You can keep a simple tally of how many pins each person knocks over per turn, or just enjoy the process without the pressure of scoring. Sometimes, the joy is purely in the act of rolling and watching the pins tumble!
- Retrieve and Repeat: After each roll, gather your pumpkin and pins, reset them, and let the next player take their turn.
Tips for Maximum Fun:
- Embrace the Imperfection: Pumpkins don’t roll as perfectly as bowling balls, and that’s part of the charm! Enjoy the unpredictable bounces and rolls.
- Vary the “Pins”: Using a mix of gourds, weighted bottles, and other items adds a fun challenge as some will be easier or harder to knock over.
- Decorate Your Lane: Add some fall leaves, hay bales, or other autumnal decorations to make your pumpkin bowling alley extra festive.
- Post-Game Treat: Reward your bowlers with some warm apple cider, pumpkin cookies, or a cozy bonfire after all the hard work!
- Safety First: Remind everyone to roll the pumpkin carefully and to avoid throwing it. Also, make sure everyone stands clear of the “lane” when someone is rolling.
Pumpkin Bowling is a wonderfully wholesome and budget-friendly way to extend the Halloween season, get the family together, and enjoy the beauty of autumn. So, before you say goodbye to those jack o’ lanterns, give them one last starring role in a game that’s sure to become a new fall tradition!
